Newark sits in the western corner of New Castle County, a few minutes from both the Maryland and Pennsylvania lines. The University of Delaware's campus runs through the middle of the city, and Main Street, lined with shops and restaurants, borders it on the north. I-95 passes just south of town, Route 896 and Route 273 carry most of the local traffic, and the Newark train station has SEPTA regional rail toward Wilmington and Philadelphia.
Open space is close by. White Clay Creek State Park stretches north of the city with miles of trails along the creek, and the Newark Reservoir has a loop path with views over town. Housing in Newark includes older single-family homes on tree-lined streets near campus, many rental properties close to Main Street, townhome communities, and larger subdivisions built from the 1960s onward on the roads leading out toward Pike Creek, Glasgow and the Maryland line. If you're buying, it is worth asking whether a home near campus has a rental history and how the city's rental permit rules apply.
