Elkton is the county seat of Cecil County, set at the head of the Elk River just a few miles from the Delaware line. In the early and mid-1900s it was known as an East Coast elopement destination because Maryland had no waiting period for marriage licenses. Today the downtown along Main Street holds county offices, small businesses and historic buildings.
I-95 runs just north of town, US-40 passes through, and Route 213 and Route 279 connect to Newark and Chesapeake City, so commutes into Delaware are short. Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, with thousands of acres of trails and the Fair Hill equestrian grounds, lies to the north. Housing in Elkton includes older homes near downtown, townhome communities, mid-century neighborhoods, newer subdivisions along the main roads, and rural homes with land outside town. If your commute runs into Delaware, it can help to compare Elkton homes with listings across the line in Newark and Glasgow.
