Milford straddles the line between Kent and Sussex counties, with the Mispillion River running through the middle of town. The Mispillion Riverwalk follows the water past downtown, where Walnut Street and the blocks around it hold shops, restaurants and older commercial buildings. Shipbuilding was once a major business on the river, and some of the larger historic homes in town date from that era.
Milford sits where Route 1 and US-113 meet, so Dover is about 20 minutes north and the Sussex County beaches are roughly 30 to 40 minutes southeast. Bayhealth's Sussex Campus hospital opened on the south side of town in 2019. Housing in Milford spans Victorian and early-1900s homes near downtown and the river, mid-century houses, townhomes, and a good number of new single-family communities on the outskirts. Because the city covers two counties, property taxes and some services depend on which side of the line a home sits, which is worth checking on any listing.
